The Dhaulagiri expedition is one of Nepal’s most thrilling and challenging mountaineering adventures, taking climbers to the summit of the world’s seventh-highest peak at 8167m. Located in the western Himalayas, Dhaulagiri – meaning “White Mountain” – offers an awe-inspiring and remote climbing experience, surrounded by deep valleys and massive glaciers. The journey begins with a scenic flight to Pokhara and a drive to the trailhead, followed by a trek through diverse landscapes ranging from lush subtropical forests to high alpine terrain. The route to base camp lies along the dramatic Myagdi Khola Valley, with breathtaking views of Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Tukuche peaks along the way. The climb itself demands technical expertise, endurance, and acclimatization, with several high camps established above the base. Despite its difficulty, the expedition rewards climbers with unparalleled Himalayan panoramas and a profound sense of achievement upon reaching the summit. Ideal for experienced mountaineers seeking a true test of skill and determination, the Dhaulagiri Expedition embodies the essence of adventure in one of the most remote corners of Nepal.

The acclimatization day ensures better physical preparedness and helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness in the higher elevations ahead.
Day 07: Trek from Marpha to Yak Kharka (4020m) O/N Tent (B L D)
After breakfast, the trek begins with a gradual ascent from Marpha, following the trail along the Kali Gandaki River before turning west toward the Dhaulagiri region. As you gain altitude, the scenery transforms into rugged hillsides, rocky slopes, and open yak pastures. This trek offers magnificent views of Dhaulagiri I, Tukuche Peak, and the surrounding Himalayan giants, growing more impressive with every step. Upon reaching Yak Kharka (around 3680m), you will find a suitable campsite surrounded by grassy meadows where yaks graze peacefully. This tranquil spot is ideal for resting and preparing for the upcoming higher-altitude trek. Day 08: Trek from Yak Kharka via Thapa Pass (5250m) to Dhampus Base Camp (5100m) – Hidden Valley O/N Tent (B L D)
Today is one of the most exciting and challenging days of the trek as you ascend from Yak Kharka and cross the Thapa Pass (5250m), leading into the stunning Hidden Valley at Dhampus Base Camp. The trail climbs steadily over rocky and snowy terrain, requiring good stamina and steady pacing as you gain significant altitude. Along the way, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Tukuche Peak, rising majestically against the deep blue sky. Reaching Thapa Pass offers a spectacular vantage point over the vast Himalayan landscape before descending carefully into the secluded Hidden Valley, a pristine alpine basin surrounded by towering snow peaks. This area remains one of Nepal’s most untouched and awe-inspiring high-altitude regions, offering a true sense of wilderness and tranquility. After a long but rewarding day, you will set up camp at Dhampus Base Camp (around 5100m), nestled in the heart of the Hidden Valley.
Day 09: Trek from Dhampus Base Camp to Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4740m) O/N Tent (B L D)
After breakfast, you begin your trek from Dhampus Base Camp toward the legendary Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4740m), the main staging point for the expedition. The trail traverses a spectacular high-altitude landscape, with rugged terrain, glacial moraines, and sweeping views of Dhaulagiri’s towering ice walls dominating the horizon. The route gradually ascends along the lateral moraine of the Chhonbardan Glacier, offering a dramatic and awe-inspiring setting throughout the day. As you approach base camp, the grandeur of Dhaulagiri I (8167m) and its neighboring peaks becomes increasingly overwhelming, showcasing one of the most magnificent mountain amphitheaters in the world. Upon arrival, the team sets up camp at the base of the mountain, where climbers will spend the coming days acclimatizing and preparing for the ascent. The evening is spent enjoying the breathtaking views and the peaceful isolation of this remote Himalayan sanctuary.
Day 10 – 26: Rotation from Base Camp to Camp I, Camp II, and Camp III O/N Tent (B L D)
Over the next several days, the expedition team will focus on a series of acclimatization and rotation climbs between Base Camp (4740m) and the higher camps – Camp I (5900m), Camp II (6400m), and Camp III (7400m) – before returning to Base Camp for rest and recovery. This crucial phase is designed to help climbers adapt to the high altitude, strengthen climbing efficiency, and transport essential gear and supplies to upper camps.
The route to Cap I involves a steady climb over glacial ridges and crevassed terrain, demanding careful navigation and the use of fixed ropes. From there, the ascent to Camp II becomes steeper and more technical, passing through ice walls and seracs. The journey to Camp III challenges climbers further with exposed ridgelines and mixed snow-and-ice sections, offering dramatic views of the Dhaulagiri massif and surrounding peaks.
Each rotation follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low”, allowing the body to gradually acclimatize while minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. Between rotations, climbers return to Base Camp for rest, nourishment, and strategic planning under the guidance of experienced Sherpas and expedition leaders. By the end of this phase, all camps are properly stocked, routes are fixed, and the team is physically and mentally prepared for the summit push.
Day 27 – 33: Climbing period from Base Camp to Summit and back O/N Tent (B L D)
This is the most critical and exhilarating stage of the Dhaulagiri Expedition, as the team launches its summit push after weeks of preparation and acclimatization. Depending on weather conditions and the team’s readiness, climbers ascend progressively from base Camp (4740m) through Camp I (5900m), Camp II (6400m), and Camp III (7400m), making careful progress and ensuring safety at every step. The climb from Camp III to the summit of Dhaulagiri (8167m) is the most demanding section, involving steep snow slopes, icy ridges, and high winds, testing both endurance and determination.
Reaching the summit is an unforgettable and emotional moment – standing atop the world’s seventh-highest peak, surrounded by the endless panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Mukut Himal, and the distant Tibetan plateau. After savoring this achievement and capturing a few moments at the top, climbers begin their careful descent, retracing the route back through the established camps to Base Camp.
The following days are dedicated to rest, celebration, and reflection at Dhaulagiri Base Camp, where the team regroups and recovers from the incredible effort of the ascent. Completing this phase marks the culmination of weeks of determination, teamwork, and the spirit of true Himalayan adventure.
Day 34: Cleaning of Base Camp O/N Tent (B L D)
After the successful completion of the climbing phase, this day is dedicated to cleaning and organizing Dhaulagiri Base Camp before departure. Following responsible mountaineering ethics, the team carefully collects all waste materials, leftover gear, and equipment to ensure the pristine environment of the Himalayas remains untouched. Camp structures are dismantled, and non-biodegradable waste is disposed of properly. This day also provides time for rest, reflection, and appreciation of the incredible journey completed amidst one of the most remote and Majestic Mountain landscapes on Earth. By the end of the day, the base camp area is restored to its natural state, upholding the principles of eco-friendly and sustainable expedition practices.

As you move toward civilization, the air becomes warmer and the landscape greener, a pleasant contrast to the stark, icy terrain of the higher altitudes. The journey follows the familiar trail along the Kali Gandaki corridor, eventually leading you back to Marpha, where the comfort of stone-paved streets, traditional houses, and warm hospitality await.
