The Lhotse Expedition offers an extraordinary opportunity to climb the world’s fourth-highest mountain, rising to 8516m beside Mount Everest in the majestic Khumbu region of Nepal. Sharing much of its route with the classic Everest climb up to Camp 3, the Lhotse ascent provides both the thrill of a world-class expedition and a quieter, more focused mountaineering experience. The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek through the legendary Everest trail that winds past Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche before reaching the iconic Everest Base Camp. From there, climbers navigate the challenging Khumbu Icefall and ascend through the Western Cwm to the steep, icy slopes of the Lhotse Face, establishing multiple high camps. The final climb to the summit involves tackling the narrow Lhotse Couloir, a steep gully that demands technical skill, endurance, and precision. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the entire Khumbu Himalaya. Combining breathtaking scenery, Sherpa culture, and high-altitude adventure, the Lhotse Expedition is one of Nepal’s most rewarding and technically demanding climbs – perfect for experienced mountaineers seeking the challenge of an 8000 m peak beside Everest’s grandeur.

After about two to three hours, you will reach Gorak Shep (5164m), the last settlement on the route, where you can take a short rest and have lunch before the final push. Standing here, surrounded by the world’s tallest peaks, is an unforgettable moment, the culmination of days of trekking through the Khumbu Valley. After taking photos and soaking in the incredible atmosphere, you will stay overnight at Everest Base Camp.
Day 11 – 39: Rotation from Base Camp to Camp I, Camp II, and Camp III O/N Tent (B L D)
The next phase of the Lhotse Expedition is dedicated to acclimatization rotations between Base Camp and the higher camps on the mountain. This crucial process helps climbers adapt to extreme altitude, prepare for the summit push, and ensure all necessary equipment, food, and oxygen are in place. From Everest Base Camp (5364m), climbers begin the rotation by ascending the Lhotse route via the Khumbu Icefall and Western Cwm to Camp I (6065m). This initial climb allows climbers to familiarize themselves with the technical terrain, including ice walls, crevasses, and rocky slopes. After spending a night at Camp I, climbers return to Base Camp to rest and recover.
The second rotation continues upward to Camp II (6400m), situated on a snow-covered plateau at the base of the Lhotse Face. This climb involves navigating steep snow slopes and fixed ropes under the guidance of experienced Sherpas. After staying at Camp II, climbers descend once again to Base Camp, allowing their bodies to adjust to the altitude while ensuring proper rest.
The final rotation reaches Camp III (7900m) on the Lhotse Face, the last high-altitude camp before the summit push. This section requires advanced technical skill, careful pacing, and endurance, as climbers traverse steep ice and rock terrain under extreme conditions. Camp III serves as the staging point for the final ascent to the Lhotse summit (8516m). These rotations, spanning nearly a month, are critical for safe and successful climbing, giving climbers the physical and mental preparation needed to tackle one of the world’s most demanding treks.
Day 40 – 53: Climbing period from Base Camp to Summit and back O/N Tent (B L D)
This is the most crucial and thrilling stage of the Lhotse Expedition, as climbers make their way toward the long-awaited summit push. After weeks of preparation and rotations, the team waits at Base Camp (5364m) for a stable weather window, ensuring safe conditions for the climb. Once the forecast is favorable, the ascent begins, retracing the route through the Khumbu Icefall to Camp I (6065m) and then onward to Camp II (6400m) in the vast Western Cwm. After proper rest and assessment, climbers continue to Camp III (7900m) on the steep Lhotse Face, where the thin air and icy slopes demand intense focus and stamina. From here, the final ascent toward the Lhotse Couloir begins, a narrow technical gully that defines the mountain’s signature climb.
The summit push typically begins in the early hours before dawn, under a sky ablaze with stars. As climbers ascend the couloir, the slope steepens dramatically, requiring careful use of fixed ropes and steady breathing in the thin, frigid air. Reaching the summit of Lhotse (8516m) is an indescribable moment of triumph – standing atop the world’s fourth-highest peak, with Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the entire Khumbu Himalaya stretching endlessly around you. After a short time at the top to capture photos and soak in the views, the descent begins cautiously, retracing steps back to the lower camps. Over the following days, the team gradually returns to Base Camp, exhausted yet content. The summit period marks the culmination of immense effort, endurance, teamwork, and determination, a powerful and unforgettable chapter in every mountaineer’s journey.
Day 54: Cleaning up Base Camp O/N Tent (B L D)
After successful completion of the climb, this day is dedicated to cleaning and organizing the Base Camp before departure. Following the guiding principles of Leave No Trace and responsible mountaineering, the team works together to ensure the campsite is left pristine. All personal gear, tents, and climbing equipment are carefully packed, while non-biodegradable waste is collected and prepared for transport back to Lukla or Kathmandu for proper disposal. Sherpa staff and climbers also inspect the surrounding area to remove any remaining trash or materials left behind during the expedition. This effort reflects deep respect for the fragile Himalayan environment and the local communities who depend on it. As the final campfire fades and prayer flags flutter gently in the mountain breeze, there’s a shared sense of pride and gratitude – for the mountain, the team, and the incredible journey that has come full circle at the base camp.
Day 55: Trek from Everest Base Camp to Pheriche (4371m) O/N Lodge (B L D)
After bidding farewell to the majestic Everest Base Camp, the descent toward lower altitudes begins. The trail retraces its path across the rocky moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, passing through Gorak Shep and gradually descending toward Lobuche. As you move lower, the air grows thicker, and each step feels easier, allowing time to reflect on the incredible achievement of standing at the base – and perhaps even the summit – of one of the world’s highest peaks. Continuing further down the valley, you will pass the climbers’ memorials at Thukla Pass, a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifices made in these mountains. The trail then drops steadily into the open valley, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and the soothing sound of mountain streams. By afternoon, you will reach Pheriche (4371m), a peaceful village known for its Himalayan Rescue Association post and warm hospitality. The evening offers a well-deserved rest, hearty food, and a chance to enjoy the comfort of a lower elevation after weeks in the high-altitude wilderness.
Day 56: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3440m) O/N Lodge (B L D)
After breakfast, the trail descends gradually through alpine meadows and stone-walled fields, retracing your steps toward the lush lower valleys. You will pass through the charming villages of Orsho and Pangboche, where you can visit the ancient monastery and enjoy one last close view of Ama Dablam’s elegant peak. Continuing downward, the path leads through rhododendron and juniper forests to Debuche and Tengboche, where you may pause to admire the monastery’s spiritual serenity and panoramic mountain views. From here, a steep descent takes you to the Dudh Koshi River, followed by a steady climb through pine forests filled with prayer flags and mani stones. The trail eventually opens up to the lively hub of Namche Bazaar (3440m), where familiar comforts await – cozy lodges, bakeries, and the cheerful chatter of trekkers. After days in the high, rugged wilderness, arriving in Namche feels both rewarding and rejuvenating, offering a well-earned rest and celebration among friends and fellow climbers.

Passing through familiar villages such as Monjo, Benkar, and Phakding, you will enjoy the warmth of the lower altitude and the lush greenery that surrounds the trail. The walk is filled with reflections of the expedition – from the first thrilling flight into Lukla to the breathtaking views of Lhotse and Everest. After a gradual final ascent, you will arrive in Lukla by afternoon, where the team gathers for a well-deserved rest and celebration with the Sherpa crew.
