From here, the panorama of glaciers, sharp ridges, and surrounding Himalayan giants is awe-inspiring, setting the stage for the final summit push. The evening is spent hydrating, checking gear, and mentally preparing for the challenging climb ahead.
Day 15-30: Rotation from base camp to camp I, Camp II, and Camp III O/N Tent (B L D)
The next two weeks are dedicated to the crucial process of acclimatization and load rotation between the higher camps on Mt. Makalu. This phase helps climbers adapt to extreme altitude while establishing and stocking the upper camps with essential gear, food, and oxygen. From Base Camp (4870m), the route first ascends steeply toward Camp I (6100m), following glacial moraine and climbing across icy and rocky slopes. This section introduces climbers to the technical challenges ahead, with fixed ropes often used for safety. After spending a night at Camp I to acclimatize, climbers descend back to Base Camp for rest and recovery before heading higher again.
Once acclimatized, the team makes the next push to Camp II (6600m), located on a snow-covered plateau with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. The climb involves negotiating crevasses and ice walls, requiring steady technique and teamwork. Camp II serves as an important staging point, and climbers typically spend another night here before returning to Base Camp for full recovery. During each rotation, equipment and supplies are ferried upward, ensuring that each higher camp is well-stocked and secure for the final summit attempt.
The final rotation involves reaching Camp III (7400m), which lies on a steep and exposed ridge just below the summit route. This section demands strong technical skills and endurance as climbers traverse mixed rock, ice, and snow terrain. Spending limited time at Camp III helps the body adapt to extreme altitude before descending once again to Base Camp for a longer rest period. These rotations are essential for both safety and success, allowing climbers to strengthen physically and mentally while familiarizing themselves with the mountain’s challenging conditions. By the end of the rotation phase, all camps are established, gear is in place, and the team is fully prepared for the final push toward the summit of Makalu.
Day 31-42: Climbing period from Base Camp to Summit and back O/N Tent (B L D)
This phase marks the most challenging and rewarding part of the Makalu Expedition, the final summit push. After sufficient rest and preparation at Base Camp, the climbing team begins the ascent through the established camps, progressing steadily to high elevations. From Base Camp, climbers move first to Camp I (6100m), retracing the familiar route over rocky ridges and glacial terrain. The climb is slow and deliberate to conserve energy and maintain steady acclimatization. After an overnight rest, the ascent continues to Camp II (6600m), where climbers face steeper snow slopes and increasing exposure to strong winds and cold temperatures. The panoramic views of the Himalayas expand dramatically with every meter gained, fuelling motivation for the demanding climb ahead.
From Camp II, the team pushes toward Camp III (7400m), crossing mixed sections of ice, snow, and rock. This is one of the most technical sections of the expedition, requiring careful rope work and teamwork. Camp III, located on a narrow and exposed ridge, serves as the final staging point for the summit attempt. Climbers rest briefly here, hydrating and preparing equipment before making the decisive climb to the top of Mount Makalu (8485m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. The summit push usually begins late at night or early in the morning to take advantage of calm weather and stable snow conditions. The ascent to the summit involves steep pitches, icy couloirs, and the final push across the sharp summit ridge.
Reaching the summit of Makalu is an unforgettable and emotional moment – climbers are rewarded with breathtaking 360°views of Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse, Kanchenjunga, and the vast Himalayan range stretching endlessly across the horizon. After capturing this once-in-a-lifetime achievement, the descent begins carefully down to Camp III, then to Camp II, and finally back to Base Camp over the following days. The return journey requires focus and patience, as fatigue and changing weather can add to the challenge. Upon arrival at Base Camp, climbers celebrate their success, rest, and reflect on their incredible accomplishment – conquering one of the world’s most formidable peaks. The remaining days are spent organizing equipment, assisting porters with loads, and preparing for the journey back down the valley.
Day 43: Cleaning of base camp O/N Tent (B L D)
As the successful completion of the climbing period, today is dedicated to the cleaning and restoration of Makalu Base Camp. Following the principle of “Leave No Trace”, the team carefully collects all garbage, climbing gear, and leftover supplies to ensure the environment remains pristine for future expeditions. All non-biodegradable waste, including oxygen bottles, food wrappers, and packing materials, is packed and prepared for transport back to the lower villages of Kathmandu for proper disposal. The campsite is thoroughly inspected to make sure nothing is left behind, preserving the natural beauty of the Makalu-Barun National Park. This process not only demonstrates respect for the mountain but also promotes responsible and sustainable mountaineering practices. Once the clean-up is completed, the climbers and support staff take time to rest, share stories, and celebrate their collective efforts in conquering one of the world’s most challenging peaks while leaving the base camp as untouched as possible.
Day 44: Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka (3600m) O/N Tent (B L D)
After breakfast and a final farewell to the majestic Makalu Base Camp, the descent toward a lower altitude begins. The trail retraces the familiar route back down through the rugged alpine terrain, following the Barun valley. As you descend, the stark glacial landscape gradually gives way to patches of alpine meadows and scattered shrubs, bringing back a touch of greenery. The trek offers magnificent views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks from a different perspective, and the lower oxygen levels make breathing noticeably easier. The walk, mostly downhill, can be demanding on the knees due to the rocky and uneven paths. After several hours of trekking through the serene and remote Barun Valley, you arrive at Yangle Kharka, a beautiful pastureland surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The air feels warmer and more comfortable here, providing a welcome contrast to the harsh conditions of higher altitudes. You will set up camp, enjoy a hearty meal, and rest by the riverside, reflecting on your successful journey from the heights of Makalu.

As you move higher, the path becomes steeper, winding along rocky slopes and ridges that provide stunning views of the Barun Valley below and the distant snow-capped peaks. Along the way, you will pass through familiar spots and rest points used during the ascent, now offering a sense of accomplishment as you retrace your journey in reverse. The trek demands endurance and steady pacing due to the significant altitude gain. By afternoon, you reach Khongma Danda, perched high above the valley with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains. After several days in remote wilderness, arriving here feels both familiar and rewarding. You stay overnight in Khongma.
Day 46: Trek from Khongma to Sedwa (1872m) O/N Lodge (B L D)
