Your journey begins with a scenic flight to Paro on Bhutan’s national airline, Druk Air, offering breathtaking views of the world’s highest mountains. On a clear day, you’ll catch glimpses of towering peaks before landing in the lush Paro valley. Upon arrival, breathe in the fresh, cool air of Bhutan. After clearing immigration, your guide will greet you and take you to Paro town for lunch. Paro is a charming valley with traditional villages nestled amid terraced rice fields. Despite being home to Bhutan’s first airport, Paro still holds onto its cultural heritage in architecture and farming practices. After lunch at your hotel, you will drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Thimphu, with a population of around 98,500, is unique as it is the only capital in the world without traffic lights. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight at the hotel.
In the morning, visit the Institute of Traditional Medicine, where ancient healing practices such as acupuncture and herbal treatments are still in use today. Next, explore the Folk Heritage Museum, which offers a glimpse into Bhutan’s rural past through displays of everyday household items and artifacts. Also visit the Textile Museum, where the rich tradition of weaving is showcased, preserving a stunning collection of colorful, intricate textiles. In the afternoon, head to the National Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. In the evening, visit the Handicrafts Emporium, which sells a wide range of authentic Bhutanese handicrafts. Overnight stay at the hotel.
In the morning, visit the Bhutanese Handmade Paper Factory, Zilukha Nunnery, Motithang Mini Zoo, and the Sangaygang viewpoint. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Thimphu. After lunch, depart for Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. As you leave Thimphu, the road ascends steeply through a forest of pine and cedar, draped with hanging lichen, leading to Dochula Pass (3,050 m). This pass offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range. After a tea stop to enjoy the view, descend along a winding road into the fertile valley of Punakha. Overnight stay at the hotel.
In the morning, visit Punakha Dzong, the winter seat of the Je Khenpo and the Monk Body, located between the Mo (Female) Chu and Pho (Male) Chu rivers. Then, drive to Gangtey via Wangdue, a major town and district headquarters in Western Bhutan. Make a brief stop to view the Wangdiphodrang Dzong, perched dramatically on a hill at the confluence of the Tsang Chu and Dang Chu rivers. Continue the journey, climbing through semi-tropical vegetation before reaching Pelela Pass, where the landscape changes to an alpine environment with rhododendrons and dwarf bamboo. This pass traditionally marks the boundary between West and East Bhutan, offering stunning views of the Himalayan range, including the peak of Chomolhari to the west. Finally, reach Gangtey, nestled on the slopes of the Black Mountains. Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Gompa (currently under renovation) and explore the Phobjikha Valley, known for its gentle slopes and breathtaking beauty, often called “the most beautiful valley in the Himalayas.” This valley is also home to the wintering black-necked cranes that migrate from the northern arid plains to the milder climate of Phobjikha. In the evening, enjoy a walk around the peaceful valley of Gangtey, situated at an altitude of 3,000 meters. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, drive to Paro, passing through Thimphu and Dochola Pass. Enjoy lunch at Dochola Cafeteria before continuing the journey to Thimphu. In Thimphu, visit the Weekly Outdoor Market, a bustling hub where locals shop for fresh fruits, vegetables, rice, grains, chilies, and other foods. The market stalls are filled with vibrant local goods, including yak tail dusters, butter tea cups, turquoise from Nepal and Tibet, and musical instruments. After lunch, continue the drive to Paro, passing through the confluence. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, drive along the winding road to Drukgyal Dzong, the historic ruined fort that once protected the valley from Tibetan invasions. On the way back, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, dating back to the 7th century. Lunch will be served at a restaurant in Paro town. After lunch, explore Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower that now houses the National Museum, which was converted in 1968. The museum showcases a variety of items, including antique thangka, textiles, weapons, armor, household objects, and a rich collection of natural and historic artifacts. Also, visit Rinpung Dzong, built in the 17th century to protect the valley from Tibetan invasions. The dzong now serves as an administrative center and a school for monks. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Olathang.
In the morning, your Bhutanese guide will bid you farewell at Paro Airport. Wishing you a safe and pleasant journey back home.
