Arrive in Paro via Druk Air. After completing visa formalities at the airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. If time allows, visit the picturesque valley and the iconic Ta-Dzong, a historic watchtower converted into the National Museum in the 1960s by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. This seven-story museum showcases Bhutanese culture and history, dating back to the 7th century. Overnight stay in Paro.
Begin the day with a visit to the ruins of Drugyel Dzong, a fortress that once protected the Paro Valley from Tibetan invasions in the 17th century. Its strategic location still draws visitors, and on clear days, you can enjoy stunning views of Mount Chomolhari (7,320 meters) towering above the Dzong.
Next, embark on a hike to the Taktsang Monastery viewpoint. The uphill trail, which takes 2 to 3 hours, winds through villages and pine forests. Perched on a granite cliff 800 meters above the Paro Valley, the monastery is a sacred site where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have flown on the back of a tigress in the 7th century to meditate in a cave for three months.
In the late afternoon, drive approximately two hours (65 km) to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Enjoy free time in the evening and stay overnight in Thimphu.
Start the day with sightseeing in Thimphu, including a visit to the Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the 15th-century Changangkha Monastery, and the newly established Drupthob Nunnery Temple.
In the afternoon, embark on a scenic 3-hour drive to Wangduephodrang, crossing the Dochula Pass at an altitude of 3,100 meters. On clear days, the pass offers stunning views of the eastern Himalayan ranges, including Bhutan’s highest peak, Mt. Gangar Punsum (7,520 meters). From the pass, the road descends into the warmer valleys of Lobesa.
Upon arrival, explore the Wangduephodrang Dzong from the outside and visit the local market area. Spend the night in Punakha.
After lunch in Babesa, embark on a 4-hour drive to Paro. Along the way, visit Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest structure, now functioning as a Buddhist university. Conclude the day with an overnight stay at Hotel Olathang in Paro.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Paro Airport for your flight to Kathmandu.
