Your journey begins with a scenic flight to Paro aboard Bhutan’s national carrier, Druk Air, offering a perfect introduction to the country’s stunning beauty. On clear days, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the world’s highest peaks before descending into the lush Paro Valley. Upon arrival, the first gift from Bhutan is the cool, fresh air as you step off the plane.
After completing customs and visa formalities, your guide will provide an introduction and transfer you to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, a 1.5-hour drive away. Thimphu, home to about 100,000 people, is unique as it is the only capital in the world without traffic lights, with its town center consisting of just three rows of shops.
In the evening, visit the Handicrafts Emporium, where you can explore a wide variety of Bhutanese handicrafts. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, drive to Sangaygang, a hilltop location adorned with Bhutanese prayer flags. The colorful flags send prayers to the heavens, while the white flags are meant to honor the deceased. Next, visit the Motithang Mini Zoo, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, where these unique creatures peacefully graze in a protected park.
Then, take a walk to Zilukha Nunnery. Continue your sightseeing in Thimphu with a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum, a beautifully restored Bhutanese farmhouse from the last century, and the National Painting School.
Explore the Weekend Market, where vendors from across the region gather from Friday to Sunday, offering indigenous goods, handicrafts, and locally produced items.
In the evening, visit the National Memorial Chorten, dedicated to the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It’s a wonderful opportunity to interact with the local community. Bhutanese architecture is distinctive, with all buildings following national design principles and being beautifully carved and decorated. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at your hotel.
After breakfast, depart for Punakha. The drive begins with a steep climb through a pine and cedar forest, draped with hanging lichen, as you make your way to Dochula Pass (3,050 meters). On clear days, the pass offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges. After a tea break and enjoying the views, embark on a leisurely hour-long downhill walk through magnolia, hydrangea, viburnum, and evergreen oaks, passing by wild orchids, before reaching the road. From there, board your transport and continue into the Punakha Valley.
Upon arrival, lunch will be served at your hotel. Then, take a short drive to Punakha Dzong, an ancient capital and the winter seat of the Je Khenpo, located at the confluence of the Mo (Female) Chu and Pho (Male) Chu rivers. The Dzong is
open to visitors only during the summer when the Je Khenpo and the Monk Body are in Thimphu. The Je Khenpo holds the highest religious position in Bhutan and leads the Drukpa sect, while the Monk Body is Bhutan’s main monastic group. Bhutan’s governance is divided between the religious leadership of the Je Khenpo and the administrative authority of the DrukDesi.
In the afternoon, enjoy a hike to the Khamsum Yueley Chorten, a 45-minute walk through terraced rice fields, offering scenic views of the village and Kabina. Return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
In the morning, depart from Punakha and head towards Wangdue. After exploring Wangdue, continue your journey back to Paro. The drive offers scenic views, and you will make stops along the way to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. Upon arrival in Paro, check in at your hotel. Enjoy dinner and relax for the night.
After breakfast, drive along the winding road to Drukgyal Dzong, the ruins of a fortress that once protected the valley from Tibetan invasions. Also, visit a local Bhutanese farmhouse in Drukgyal for an authentic glimpse into everyday Bhutanese life.
Next, continue your journey past Satsam Chorten and embark on a hike (or horse ride) to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). The horse ride to the cafeteria takes about 1.5 hours. At the viewpoint, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of the monastery, where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have landed on the back of a tigress in the 8th century.
Afterward, walk back to the road and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
