Dominated by the majestic Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest peak at 8,485 meters, the trek provides stunning vistas of iconic Himalayan giants, including Everest, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga, from high-altitude vantage points such as Shipton La and Keke La passes. The trail winds through the Makalu Barun National Park, a biodiversity hotspot teeming with exotic flora and fauna, including rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and rare wildlife like the red panda, Himalayan thar, and snow leopard. Upon your arrival, a representative from Manaslu Adventure Treks will warmly welcome you at the airport with a flower garland and ensure a smooth transfer to your designated hotel in the city. Once you check in and settle, the representative will provide a detailed program briefing, including an overview of your upcoming trip. Also, any necessary documentation will be reviewed and finalized to ensure everything is in order.
If time permits, you can explore the local area on a short walk. This will allow you to acclimatize to the environment and enjoy the surroundings. The day concludes with a special welcome dinner hosted at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy authentic Nepalese cuisine and get acquainted with fellow travelers and the Manaslu Adventure Treks team.
After breakfast, you will take a short domestic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. It lies in the Arun River Valley and offers a spectacular aerial view of the Himalayas, lush forests, and terraced farmlands. After arriving at Tumlingtar, you will take a 4-5 hrs drive to Num, a small hilltop village with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and ridges. You stay overnight at Num.
Today, the trekking adventure begins truly as you leave Num and descend into the lush valleys of the Makalu region. You start with a steep descent through terraced fields and forested trails to reach the banks of the Arun River. This river originates from the Tibetan Plateau and cuts through the Makalu-Barun region, offering spectacular views. Then you will cross a long suspension bridge, a thrilling experience amidst the roaring water below. The trail shifts to a steep ascent, through subtropical forests, passing small villages and terraced fields. The climb can be challenging but incredibly rewarding, with glimpses of lush hillsides and distant peaks. Finally, you arrive in Seduwa (1500m), a small picturesque village surrounded by terraced farmlands, where you stay overnight.
This day takes you further into the heart of Makalu-Barun National Park, with a gradual ascent through picturesque villages, lush forests, and terraced fields. The trail gently ascends, offering views of traditional villages, terraced farmlands, and the Arun Valley below. You walk through the subtropical forests with diverse flora and fauna. These trails are alive with the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. You will pass by several small villages where locals can be seen tending to their fields or livestock. The final stretch involves a steady climb through terraced farmlands to reach Tashigaun (2100m), a charming Sherpa village nestled amidst verdant hills and the grandeur of the Himalayas. You stay overnight at Tashigaun.
Today is a significant day in your journey as you ascend into higher altitudes, leaving behind the villages and farmlands to enter the rugged Himalayan wilderness. You depart from Tashigaun with a gradual ascent through terraced fields and rhododendron forests. The trail transitions from cultivated areas to dense oak, rhododendron, and pine forests, where you can spot Himalayan wildlife like langurs and colorful pheasants. The final part of the trail involves a steep, continuous climb through forested trails and alpine meadows. You arrive at Khongma La (Danda) (3500m), a ridge offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. This is your first experience with thin air at higher elevations, making it an essential acclimatization point. You stay overnight at Khongma La.
Today, you will cross the Khongma La Pass and descend into the tranquil forests of Mumbuk. It is one of the most challenging portions of the trek, with breathtaking views of the Himalayas. You start early to ensure sufficient time for crossing the pass. The trail ascends sharply, taking you through rugged terrain with panoramic views. The Khongma La Pass is a challenging climb with steep sections, rocky trails, and thin air. At the top, you are rewarded with the awe-inspiring views of Mount Makalu, Chamlang, and other towering peaks. Depending on your route, you may cross similar passes like Shipton La and Keke La during the day. Now, the trail descends sharply into the lush forests of Mumbuk (3540m), where you stay overnight.
You will get into the remote wilderness of the Makalu-Barun National Park as you trek from the serene forest clearing of Mumbuk to the rugged alpine meadows of Yangle Kharak (3557m). You leave Mumbuk and follow the trail descending slightly before gradually ascending through diverse terrain. The trail enters the stunning Barun Valley, a pristine area known for its lush vegetation, glacial rivers, and dramatic cliffs. The Barun River flows alongside the trail, adding a sense of tranquility. Some parts of the trail are narrow, with steep drops, requiring careful footing. The final stretch to Yangle Kharak involves a gradual ascent through meadows and alpine pastures. You stay overnight in Yangle Kharak.
Today is a pivotal day as you ascend further into the alpine region leaving behind the lush greenery of the Barun Valley and entering the rugged, high-altitude landscape of Merek (4100m). You begin the trek with a gradual ascent through open pastures and rocky terrain. The trail follows the Barun River, which narrows as you climb higher. The trek transitions into alpine meadows dotted with patches of moss and lichen. The towering peaks of the Makalu Massif come into view, providing a breathtaking backdrop to your journey. Vegetation becomes sparse as you gain altitude, with the trail winding through rocky outcrops and glacial moraine leading to Merek, a small campsite, where you stay overnight.
The journey reaches higher altitudes as you ascend to Shersong (4630m), located at the heart of the Makalu-Barun region. You begin the trek with a steady ascent along the alpine terrain. The trail becomes more barren, with sparse vegetation paving the way to rocks and glacial debris. As you climb higher, you will be rewarded with unobstructed views of Mount Makalu and the other majestic peaks like Baruntse and Chamlang. The trail weaves through glacial moraines, with shimmering steams and icy patches adding to the dramatic beauty. Finally, you reach Shersong, a high-altitude campsite surrounded by awe-inspiring peaks, where you stay overnight.
Today is the highlight of the trek as you will finally reach Makalu Base Camp (4870m), which offers spectacular views from the foot of Mount Makalu. The trail starts with a steady ascent across rugged glacial terrain. The path consists of rocks, moraine fields, and steep sections, with dramatic views. As you approach the base camp, the panorama of towering peaks becomes even more spectacular. You can see Mount Makalu in all its glory, along with Baruntse, Chamlang, and the Kali Himal ridge. The final stretch to Makalu Base Camp involves trekking across glacial moraine and barren high-altitude terrain. The landscape is captivating with icefalls, glaciers, and snow-capped mountains. Upon reaching the base camp, you will get a close-up view of Mount Makalu. You stay overnight in base camp.
These three days at Makalu Base Camp offer a unique opportunity to explore the surrounding landscapes, acclimatize to the high altitude, and immerse yourself in the dramatic, natural beauty of the Makalu-Barun region.
On Day 11, you can spend the day resting and allowing your body to adjust to higher altitude. If you are feeling well and have the energy, you can take a short trek to a nearby viewpoint for panoramic views of Mount Makalu along with surrounding peaks like Chamlang and Baruntse.
On Day 12, you can take a half-day trek to explore the Makalu Glacier or hike to a nearby ridge for an elevated view of the base camp area. You can also visit Barun Glacier, a stunning glacier that flows from the north face of Mount Makalu.
On Day 13, if you are strong and well-acclimatized, you can take a longer hike to a higher viewpoint such as Barun Valley, for further acclimatization while taking in even more stunning views. You can spend the afternoon relaxing, journaling, or simply taking in the surroundings before beginning preparation for the descent back to lower altitudes.
Today, you begin descending from Makalu Base Camp, retracing your steps toward Mumbuk (3540m). This marks the start of your return journey, and the downhill trek offers a chance to enjoy the landscapes from a different perspective. After a restful morning, you descend from base camp, retracing your steps through the moraines and glaciers. You will pass through Shersong and Merek on your way back to Mumbuk and the final trail winds through alpine meadows and forested sections. You stay overnight in Mumbuk.
You will continue to descend from Mumbuk and ascend to Khongmala (3500m). The first part of the trail involves some descent before you start ascending again toward the pass. The route to Khongmala involves several steep sections. As you climb, the path winds through dense rhododendron forests, offering a nice change of scenery compared to the more
barren alpine zones. On your way up to Khongmala, the views of Makalu, Chamlang, and other surrounding peaks will remain constant companions. You stay overnight in Khongmala.
Today, you will descend further from Khongmala to Seduwa (1500m), a village at a lower altitude. It offers a significant change in terrain, as you leave the higher altitudes and enter the lush valleys and forests once again. The trail drops gradually, weaving through rhododendron forests and giving way to more varied vegetation as you approach lower altitudes. As you descend, the trail meanders through dense forest and crosses glacial streams. After several hours of walking, you will finally reach Seduwa, a charming village, where you stay overnight.
You will continue your descent, heading from Seduwa to Gimi Gaun (1420m), a small village at a lower altitude. You start with a relatively easy descent from Seduwa, through dense forests, primarily of rhododendron and oak trees. You will notice the gradual change from the higher-altitude flora to more subtropical vegetation. The trail crosses several streams, and you may encounter small waterfalls along the way, providing beautiful scenery and the soothing sound of running water. Finally, you will reach Gimi Gaun, a quaint village surrounded by terraced fields and forests. You stay overnight in Gimi Gaun.
Today, you will continue your descent from Gimi Gaun to Yamphu Phedi (1400m), a small settlement near the Barun River. The trail begins with a steady descent through terraced fields and forested areas. As you descend, you will pass through small villages and interact with local communities. The area is known for its agricultural landscapes, with terraced rice, millet, and vegetable fields. Then you will approach the Barun River, the key landmark to the rest of the trek. You will finally arrive in Yamphu Phedi, a serene settlement, where you stay overnight.
You will further continue to descend from Yamphu Phedi to Baluwabesi (1200m), a small village perfect for resting and relaxing. The trail descends from Yamphu Phedi passing through terraced fields, small villages, and farmlands. You pass through rural villages of Nepal where you can observe local agricultural practices. Along the way, you will cross small streams and rivers, with picturesque footbridges offering views of lush, green valleys. Finally, you will reach Baluwabesi, a peaceful settlement that marks the end of your day’s trek, where you stay overnight.
Today, you will complete your final stretch of the Makalu Base Camp trek, descending further from Baluwabesi to Tumlingtar (400m), where the trek officially ends. The trail continues to descend, taking you through forests, past terraced fields, and small settlements. The landscape becomes verdant, as you get closer to the valley floor. As you approach Tumlingtar, you will pass through more villages and farmlands. Finally, you will reach Tumlingtar, a small town that serves as the gateway to the Makalu region. You stay overnight in Tumlingtar.
You will take an early morning scenic flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. The flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayas, including Makalu and Mount Everest. After landing in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to a hotel. You can have the rest of the day to relax and unwind.
This day offers a free day in Kathmandu, allowing you to relax, explore the city, or do some last-minute shopping. You can treat yourself to a spa or massage, available at many hotels and wellness centers in Kathmandu. It’s a great way to relax your muscles after a long trek. You can explore Kathmandu’s rich culture by visiting iconic landmarks such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Patan Durbar Square. For shopping souvenirs, the popular tourist area of Thamel is perfect. If you prefer a more local experience, visit Asan Market or Indra Chowk to shop for spices, textiles, and souvenirs. The day concludes with a farewell dinner at a local Nepali restaurant and travel arrangements to your destination.
On the final day of your journey, a special Trip Conclude Ceremony will be organized by Manaslu Adventure treks. During this heartfelt event, the team will express gratitude for your participation and acknowledge the memorable experiences shared throughout the adventure. Also, the clients are free to provide feedback, which is valuable for the team to understand your experience and gather insights to improve future trips. As a token of appreciation, a souvenir will be presented to you, symbolizing the lasting memories of your adventure and deep connection to Nepal’s culture and natural beauty.
The day concludes with a final goodbye and transfer arrangements to your onward destination, whether to the airport or your next journey within Nepal. The team will ensure your departure is smooth and filled with warm wishes for future travels.
For trip confirmation, please make a down payment minimum of USD 200.00 or 20% of the total cost. In some cases, the trip cost could be high depending upon the domestic flight or trekking & expedition. In such cases, we will inform you accordingly. Please note that the deposit amount is non-refundable in the case of cancellation. However, the trip could be rescheduled again. The remaining dues must be paid 15 days before departure by bank transfer or on arrival in Kathmandu.
No refund will be made for the initial booking confirmation amount provided under any circumstances of cancellation. However, we offer to reschedule your trip for any other date of next season or within a year. Manaslu Adventure Treks will refund you if you have paid a further amount of the trip cost. If the cancellation is made before 30 days of the trip start date, then, a full refund will be made except the booking confirmation amount. Likewise, a 50% refund will be made on cancellation before 15 days of the trip start date and a 25% refund on the cancellation before 10 days. Furthermore, cancellations made within a week will be considered as no show & no refund will be made.
