Mt. Manaslu is located on the north side of the Gorkha district along the Kali Gandaki valley. This mountain was previously known as Kutan l. ‘tang’ being the Tibetan word for flat place, thereby describing the mountain’s general summit. It was then renamed Manaslu, which comes from the Sanskrit word “Manasa” meaning “intellect” or “soul”. It was first climbed by T. Imanishi & G. Norbu in 1956. Many consider the three peaks of Manaslu as Japanese peaks, as they were the first to reach its summit in 1956. There exist half a dozen different routes on Manaslu today. The south face of this ‘Mountain of intellect’ is arguably the toughest in climbing history, as well as Peak 29 is also very famous, located in this area too. The main our caravan route takes off at Samagaon and Sama Gompa, where, incidentally, Manaslu is called Kambung – after a local God. It was here in this selfsame village back in 1954 that the second Japanese expedition met with bitter resistance from the locals. They blamed the presence of the heathen foreigners for the avalanches and pestilence in the valley. They felt that the Japanese had insulted the Gods dwelling in the mountains, thereby angering them into creating such adverse conditions. Nowadays, climbers are attracted to climb this beautiful mountain, and from the summit, you can see many mountains of the Annapurna and Ganesh Himal range, as well as the Tibetan dry land.
We suggest every climber hire the Helicopter Charter for transporting the whole gear needed for the expedition from Kathmandu/ Sama Gompa/ Kathmandu, as the caravan trail starts from Gorkha.

Climbers ascend and descend the mountain in stages, gradually adjusting to the altitude while establishing and stocking each camp with supplies. Weather windows are closely monitored, as summit attempts depend heavily on favourable conditions.
The final summit push usually begins from Camp III in the early hours of a clear night, with climbers moving slowly but steadily under headlamps, braving extreme cold, thin air, and high winds. After regrouping, the descent continues along the more familiar trails, with the air growing warmer and thicker as the altitude decreases.
