The journey from Kathmandu to Dolakha begins with a scenic drive through winding roads with views of hills, rivers, and small settlements. You pass through towns like Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Charikot. The road from Dolakha to Singati transitions to more rural landscapes with riverside views and lush green hills. Singati (1020m) is a gateway to more remote areas of the region. You stay overnight in Dolakha.
The journey from Singati to Jagat showcases a blend of Nepal’s rich biodiversity and pristine landscapes setting the tone for the more rugged trails ahead. The trek begins with a gentle ascend along the Tamakoshi River, passing through picturesque villages and terraced farmlands. The trail offers a mix of forested paths, rocky sections, and suspension bridges over the river. Small tea houses and local settlements provide opportunities for rest and refreshments. As you approach Jagat, you will notice traditional Nepali houses, prayer flags, and locals engaged in farming and daily chores. Jagat (1250m), is a small village with a welcoming community, where you stay overnight.
The trek from Jagat to Simigaon combines serene natural beauty with glimpses of rural Nepali life, enhancing the cultural depth of your journey. The trail starts with an uphill climb through terraced fields and dense forests. You cross suspension bridges over the Tamakoshi River, with occasional views of waterfalls and rocky outcrops. The path alternates between gentle inclines and steep ascents, requiring moderate physical effort. You pass through small settlements where locals engage in daily life and finally reach Simigaon (2025m). Simigaon is a predominantly Buddhist village with prayer wheels, Mani walls, and a small monastery. You stay overnight in Simigaon.
The trek from Simigaon to Donga offers magnificent views of the Rolwalling Himal and other snow-capped peaks in the distance. The trail begins with a steady ascent through lush pine and rhododendron forests. The path often hugs the edges of the valley, offering dramatic views of the Rolwalling River below. As you gain altitude, the trail becomes more rugged, with occasional rocky sections and small streams to cross. You pass through sparse settlements and yak pastures, reflecting the transition to a higher-altitude environment before arriving at Donga (2800m), a small settlement where you stay overnight.
The trek from Donga to Beding allows you to explore less commercialized regions, surrounded by pristine natural beauty. The trail follows the Rolwalling River with a steady climb into higher-altitude terrain. You pass through dense forests of fir, juniper, and rhododendron before transitioning to more barren, alpine landscapes. The trail is rugged, with steep ascents and stunning views of Mt. Gaurishankar and other Himalayan peaks ahead. Finally, you reach Beding (3692m), a large settlement, predominantly inhabited by Sherpa communities. You stay overnight in Beding.
Today, you acclimatize at Beding, which helps your body to adjust to high altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. You can walk through the Beding village to observe traditional Sherpa life, including their homes, farming practices, and cultural artifacts. You can visit Beding Monastery, a spiritual hub for the local Sherpa community. You can also climb to nearby ridges for stunning views of Mt. Gaurishankar and surrounding peaks. In the evening, you can immerse in the peaceful ambiance of the village, surrounded by towering peaks and the Rolwalling River.
The trek from Beding to Naa offers exceptional views of snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Mt. Gaurishankar. The trail follows the Rolwalling River through wide, open valleys surrounded by towering peaks, creating a serene atmosphere. The path is relatively gentle but at a high altitude, maintaining a steady pace is crucial. As you approach Naa (4180m), the landscape transitions to alpine meadows with fewer trees and more rocky terrain. Naa is a small, seasonal settlement primarily used by local herders during warmer months. You stay overnight in Naa.
Today, you spend extra time at Naa, to help your body adjust to the higher altitude before proceeding further. You can enjoy the tranquility of Naa village, surrounded by towering peaks and alpine beauty. Afterward, you begin with a gradual ascent toward the Yalung Pass (5100m), which provides a great acclimatization hike. The trail is challenging but rewarding, with spectacular views of the Yalung Glacier and surrounding peaks, including Gaurishankar and Melungtse. Trekking higher and returning at Naa follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, aiding acclimatization.
The trek from Naa to Nyiduk Kongma takes you through an incredibly remote and pristine section of the Rolwalling region. The trail to Nyiduk Kongma is challenging as you gain altitude. The route passes through rugged alpine terrain, rocky slopes, and glacial moraines. You will trek above the tree line and the views of Yalung glacier and High Mountain peaks such as Gaurishankar and Melungtse will be your constant companion. The trail may be rough in places, and some sections may require a steady pace to avoid overexertion. Finally, you reach Nyiduk Kongma (4750m), a remote campsite with stunning views of the mountains and glaciers. You stay overnight in Nyiduk Kongma.
The trek to Drolumbau Glacier offers a pristine and awe-inspiring setting as dramatic ice formations surround the glacier. The trail involves a continuous ascent through rugged, high-altitude terrain. The path becomes more barren and rocky, with some sections that may require scrambling over large boulders. You will cross moraine fields and glacial deposits, so be prepared for uneven and sometimes challenging footing. The final push towards Drolumbau Glacier (5205m) involves walking over snow and ice, as you approach one of the most stunning sections of the journey. You stay overnight in a camp near Drolumbau Glacier.
Today, the trail involves a significant climb to the Teshi Lapche La (5755m), one of the highest passes of the trek, followed by a descent to the Campsite at 5460m. The first part of the journey involves a steep ascent through rugged, rocky terrain and possibly some snow patches. As you climb, the landscape becomes more barren and alpine. The final push to the pass will require a steady pace due to the altitude and thin air. At Teshi Lapche La pass, you will get breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including Gaurishankar, Melungtse, and the peaks of the Rolwalling Himal. From the pass, you will descend to a high-altitude camp at 5460m, where you will stay overnight.
The trek will be a long descent from the high-altitude camp to Thame (3805m), a traditional Sherpa village at a more moderate elevation. The trail passes through alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and dense forests, gradually transitioning from the barren high-altitude landscape to the lush lower-altitude terrain. You will walk along the Thame River, following the well-established trail that offers incredible views of the surrounding peaks, including Khumbila, Teng Kang Poche, and Mt. Everest in the distance. The path is generally easier but requires focus due to steep sections and rocky terrain. The arrival at Thame, a peaceful and picturesque village, offers a welcome change. You stay overnight in Thame.
The trek from Thame to Khumjung (3871m) passes through lush forests and meadows, a pleasant contrast to the higher altitudes of previous days. The trail is relatively short and easy passing through beautiful forests, and traditional Sherpa settlements, and encountering views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks of the Khumbu region. Finally, you reach Khumjung, one of the most famous villages in the area, nestled at the foot of Khumbila Mountain. You stay overnight at Khumjung
Today, the trek will descend from Khumjung to Monjo (2840m), located at a lower elevation in the Sagarmatha National Park area. As you descend, the landscape becomes greener as you pass through rhododendrons and pine forests, and the environment is more populated with locals going about their daily activities. Before reaching Monjo, the trail passes through several smaller villages, including Namche Bazaar. Along the trail, you will get great views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse as you descend. You stay overnight in Monjo.
The final leg of the Rolwalling trek takes you from Monjo to Lukla (2840m), the location of the only airport in the region. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River and passes through small villages like Phakding and Benkar. The trek is a mix of mild ascents and descents, with some gentle uphill sections, with final glimpses of Mt. Everest and other peaks as you make the way to Lukla. Lukla is a bustling town, a transportation hub for trekkers entering and exiting the region. You stay overnight at Lukla.
Today, you take an early morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, as the weather tends to be clear earlier in the day. The flight takes about 35 minutes and offers a scenic aerial view of the surrounding mountains such as the Everest region, the Langtang region, and other Himalayan peaks before you descend to Kathmandu Valley. After landing in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. The remaining part of the day is free in Kathmandu allowing you to relax, explore the city, or do some last-minute shopping. The day concludes with a farewell dinner at a local Nepali restaurant and travel arrangements to your destination.
